Default Dual Boot XP 32 bit and Win 7 64 bit - seem to have loss Rollback

Wanted to Keep XP with rollback until sure Win7 Ultimate 64 bit would work right. Wanted XP if probelms I can revert to.

Win 7 install surprised me how easy it was.Set up with dual boot. Reading these boards seemed be correct to keep RB fully installed on old drive.

New Win 7 set up on a new 1 TB WD drive very fast reads. XP is on separate drive 300 gigs and about half full.

In Win 7 tried to install RB9 once gave me a InitProtectSysdata failed error. Tried a few more timea and says it detects its installed on computer and won't let me do anything.

Booted back to the XP drive and it was a mess. Wanted to uninstall RB there. But looks like it reverted to the baseline to back in December 2009 by itself. I never say pre boot screen come up anytime in windows 7 booting or back to XP.

In setting up Win 7 I ad a primary partition a new drive set up for Win 7 and it installs on it (was D drive at that point). But when Win set up the boot record it set Win 7 as the c
drive and changed the prior boot drive with XP as D drive which my have screwed up RB.

When XP booted up it had lost most drivers as it was trying to reinstall including monitors, USB, PCL and key board drivers none of my mouses worked (either wireless via USB or Ps2 old connector. Tried a PS2 keyboard which let me do something but much harder than with a mouse.

Was able to get to Control Panel add or delete programs which did show RB but unable to delete it using keybourd with no working mouse. What was on the desktop and loading were programs I hadn't used for a long time... Weatherbug showed date of 12/99 until it got updated from the Interent. So I think for some reason unfortunately it is back to the baseline image

I was able to get to it on the Start Menu and trying to run the console gave me the same InitProtectSysdata failed error as when I tried to install in Win 7

When I tried to uninstall RB the window came up but without a mouse trying using the tab key etc could not get the yes button to be active so could enter to "hit" it.

So seems I can't get rid of in XP drive and can't add it on Win7?????.

davephx, I'm sorry to here about your woes. However I'm also sorry to say that these problems could have been avoided.

This is definitely not correct. I'm not sure where you would have gotten this impression in these forums but I've been involved in these forums for a few years now and each time that this subject came up, I'm certain that the advice given was that Rollback must be uninstalled first when adding a new internal drive and DEFINITELY uninstalled when installing a second OS. It is possible that i may have missed a post where this may not have been the case but the advice to uninstall Rollback is echoed all over these forums and IMO should have rung alarm bells for you had you done your homework properly. Please.....I don't mean to sound like I'm having a go at you. I'm merely making a point that you somehow misunderstood what needed to be done.

Again, you have read the wrong information about Rollback. Rollback will only protect ONE harddisk. This does not mean, however, that Rollback cannot be installed on a multi OS system. Indeed Rollback works beautifully with a dual boot XP and W7x64 OS as I'm living proof of this. The key is that you must have ONE HD which contains all of the OS's in the way of partitions or as in my case, I use Firstdefense ISR. Also, you must install all of your OS's first then install Rollback in each OS (using the "custom" option).

So, in summary
1. You need to have both XP and W7 on one HD.

2. You must install all of your OS's first then install Rollback in each OS (using the "custom" option).

Your in a real mess at the moment. Your problems have manifested because you were unaware of some limitations of Rollback and the correct way of going about what you wanted. I suggest you submit a support ticket and see if they can help you out.

In the mean time, if you have any other questions, me or somebody else can try to answer them.

Well at least I was smarter in other ways, I THINK all files, mail etc is also backed up both to a different hard drive and "in the cloud" with online auto backups so I may not need old XP.

I also have image backup before installed 7 I may be able to restore - it seems to have current files.

I think my error not realizing that Win7 would install as drive c instead of the other partition I set up and though installing into. But it changed it to c. I was going to boot back to XP and then remove Rollback once I knew Win7 install was ok. I didn't realize the Win7 install would wipe out old C and rollback so now back to base line and I can't even get mouse or keyboard to work on old XP which is now drive D.

Because I had so many problems with XP I didn't trust win7 so wanted to be able to go back. But other than long learning cuve Win7 (64bit) so far is as solid as a rock Just zillions of program to reinstall...

Biggest issue is there is no Documents and settings folder having to learn about junction points etc .. still trying to figure out if can transfer old Firefox addins not sure I have applications files saved from old Docs/Settings.

So other than reinstall so far I really like Win7 and very fast now all my 6gigs of memory are available ... although not sure that is why other than multi-tasking . Even websites seem to load much faster.
