Default \\.\E:,2 Error Message Anybody seen this?

I get a "Failed to open file \\.\E:,2 " error message when I defrag, using Rollback's defrag process.

Rollback's function seems to work perfectly in spite of this error.

"Froggie" (a respected member of this forum) believes the error message is related to Rollback "looking" for the E partition but can't find it. Probably true.

Funny thing is, I have set Rollback to protect only the C partition. I have un-installed/re-installed just to be certain.

The other funny thing is, NO ERROR MESSAGE AT ALL IS PRESENTED IF I PLUG A FLASH-DRIVE INTO ANY OF THE USB PORTS !

- I have a support ticket going on this issue but even the Horizon techs are having a tough time with this one!

Anyone seen the \\.\E:,2 error message? It sort of drives me crazy!

Thanks!

Hi tubby,

Any luck or changes? I'll flag this for Nick and see if we can get any suggestions here as well.

Best,
Jacob

Default No luck or changes yet.

-The support techs have had me send them 2 screen-shots and 3 "log" files. I hope they come up with something!

I haven't seen this error before and would agree with froggie that it looks as though RB is trying to find an E: partition.

When you plug in the usb drive and go to the defrag menu, does the usb show up as E: ? Could the usb drive have been there when you installed RB the first time?

I know RB doesn't/shouldn't protect removable drives but I just wondered if there was a motherboard peculiarity going on and it was being seen as a fixed drive. Probably not

Default Hi Nexstar !

I just fired up the PC and tried your thought. Yes, my PC recognizes a Flashdrive as "E" when I plug it in.

When I view the Rollbacks "splash screen" present just before a defrag, it displays that "C" and only "C" is protected.

The error message is displayed at the end of the defrag unless I have a flashdrive plugged in to any of the USB ports. If a flashdrive IS plugged into the PC, absolutley no error message is generated! - (But who wants to walk around with a flashdrive sticking out of ones port all the time! - people might talk!)

I also thought perhaps the flashdrive might have been plugged in when I first in-stalled Rollback rx (I doubted it) but in my early testing phase, I un-installed/re-installed with and without a flash drive in just to ease my curiosity. -No change was observed.

This is actually a new Dell PC for my teenage daughter. Even now, only 2 weeks old, she has "tailered" the PC with typical teenage digital media. -She would be angry if I suggested we wipe the hard drive, re-install PC to it's Dell Factory Out of Box state just to start over in hopes that "Dad's error message goes away" -she does not even know (or care) about some technical bug that does not affect her Facebook, email, music, videos chat-world and all that "important stuff !"

- In all reality, this "bug" bugs only me. It does not seem to affect Rollback's functions at all. I just "click" the error message, Rollback's defrag finishes up, and life goes on.

- It just grates on my brain/soul to have this annoying "bug"

I have Rollback Rx on our main family PC, a 3 year old Dell desktop and it works perfectly! I really like Rollback rx. I have "sold" at least a dozen friends/family members on it. - It is so clever! No long do I have to stay up 'til 1:30AM to untangle some crazy issue issue dragged into the home PC by one of my kids! -I simple go back to a snapshot created before they even got on the computer! I take hourly snapshots! (delete most every 3 days, then defrag (Rollbacks defrag) just for good measure!

The only person who does not like Rollback I have found is a co-worker who loves multiple hard drives and loves Acronis True Image.

I am still waiting for Horizons answer. I even opted for the GOLD Member status when I purchased this product. (I knew of this issue before I bought it via the 14-day trial ver. even though I was positive I would buy it anyway.

I have this nagging feeling I may have to "live with it" sigh.......

Here's another thought.

1. Reassign the flash drive another letter (one thats not in use)

2. Try running defrag now and see if there is an error

3. Unplug flash drive and see if your error is gone or if its now got the same error with the new corresponding drive letter.

This will show if indeed the error is linked to the flash drive E: or may help show some sort of corruption with drive letter assignments.

With some luck this might even fix your problem.

EDIT: It might be prudent to reassign the flash drive while Rollback is uninstalled then reinstall Rollback after the change and see what happens. If your flash drive is inexplicably linked with Rollback, it might have undesireable consequences if you try reassigning drive letters that Rollback is "watching".

Out of interest, what happens if you defrag from the pre-boot menu?

If I plug in a usb drive then it doesn't show up in the RB defrag menu as it obviously treats it as a non-fixed drive. So it seems that your RB has got it into its head that your E: drive is a fixed drive and is surprised at it not being there when it defrags. Is there a card reader or similar built into the PC? What is the hardware, is it just one fixed drive and one CD/DVD? How many partitions are there?

I'm just clutching at straws really as I know how annoying these quirky issues are .

Default Senior members!

Your latest advice (Both of you!) is appreciated. You guys are forcing me to venture into somewhat uncharted waters (for me) regarding digging into to "mapping" of drives/partitions! "Googleing" is helping me a bit as well as looking at my older PC which also has Rollback Rx on it. It will be interesting (remember, I am not a PC pro but I like to understand)

-I went to grab the PC from my daughtor so I would have better info for you guys but she was lost in the internets "digital world" at the time! "Darn you kids!...................with your iPods...........and your Dave Clark Five"

Default Well, this is interesting...

I engaged a Rollback defrag before Windows was loaded as nexstar was curious about. No error message was generated!

Hmmmm.

I have done a million Rollback defrags the "traditional" way (after Windows was loaded) but have never defragged utilizing this early "pre-boot" technique.

Funny, even though I knew I had 22 snapshots, defragging utilizing the "preboot" technique appeared to defrag only 5 (I assume the last 5) snapshots.

But the result of the experiment was clear. No error message was generated!

Just for the heck of it, I restarted the PC and did a Rollback defrag the "normal" way. Error message continues!

Drive mapping:

Displayed I saw,

100MB Healthy OEM Partition
Recovery 1465GB NTFS Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition
OS 283.34GB NTFS (Boot,Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)

I also saw another "table"

Hard Drive (2)
OS C:
CD- ROM 0 DVD (D No media
MicroSoft Office Click to Run 2010 Protected (Q)

Well, that's how far I am now. I am certain Rollback is displaying that only "C' is protected (as viewed by the "splash screen" just prior to the defrag process. It does also list the 100MB and the 14.65GM, but Rollback calls them "Hidden" yet not protected.

It has been sveral days since I sent Horizon the log files they requested. They did thank me and said they were analizing them. (After all, I am a "Gold" member!!!!)

Well, that was 4 days ago.

I am not certain exactly how to re-assign the flash drive to a new letter. I guess that may be my next road to go down. I sure hope I don't mess things up!

The Dave Clark Five takes me back a little further than I'd like .

I'm guessing that you've got Windows 7 on the PC as it is new. If you left-click on the Start menu and then right-click on the 'Computer' option listed then left-click on the 'Manage' option, you should now have a 'Computer Management' window in front of you. In the left column, left-click on 'Disk-Management and you should then get a display of your storage devices in the right-hand window.

The bottom pane shows you the layout of the drives and partitions but you may have to scroll down to see all the devices.

What devices and drive letters are showing there? If you keep that window open and plug in your usb drive it will no doubt appear as the E: drive (does it?) but does it list it as a 'Removable'?

Whilst you are in this menu, if you right-click on the drive you will get another menu with the option 'Change Drive Letter and Paths'. This is where you can reassign the drive letter to something else. While I am pretty sure Rollback would normally not have an issue with changing the drive letter from here, I agree with carfal that it might be better to do it with RB uninstalled given your particular problem.
