Default SSD and Trim - a new era?

So, like most here, I was a bit disappointed with V10's octave reduction in its Doppler effect as it recedes into the distance. However, I also felt that the only real nugget I would like is for there to be some ability for RB to wipe the unused sectors so that we could use any imaging software in sector mode and know we weren't just backing up junk (I may have mentioned this before...several times ).

I was thinking about the new support for the Trim command for SSD's and it seemed to beg a couple of questions.

First, by 'support' does it mean that it simply disables Trim if it is enabled on the device or does it mean that it allows the Trim command to function normally?

Hopefully the latter and, if so, it raises the next question which is, how does the Trim command know which sectors are used?

Previously, it had not been possible to use any sort of 'wipe' utility because sectors where RB data was stored were not marked as used. Are these areas now flagged so that Trim can work correctly?

Getting ahead of myself here but if the Trim command now works ok on SSD (I haven't tested this yet!), then at worst, SSD users have a built in wipe facility which should reduce all sector backup sizes considerably. At best, there may now be the prospect of using 3rd party wipe tools to do the same thing on non-SSD's.

I may be completely off the mark on this as I may not have fully understood some/all of the concepts involved but, in the absence of anything else to get excited about, I thought I'd throw it out for discussion .

I would like to get excited about SSD's but i cant afford one at the moment.

So in absence of V10 released any time soon, I guess my life is over.

Hello Graham,

I've flagged this and lets see if we can get some insight.
