Default Max activations + Demo expired....

I contacted support on this, but I wanted to get user feedback anyway.

I just purchased and installed RollBackRX this morning.

I did have the trial version installed at one point. Even though I uninstalled the trial, the paid-for setup program told me that a prior version was installed, and It could not continue. Apparently there was a trace of the trial version still on my computer. I went into Add or Remove programs and sure enough, there it was. So I uninstalled what was already uninstalled, and then the paid-for version installed without a hitch, until....

I went to activate the product with my activation code, which I used during the installation, on my dual-boot OS, and it told me that I "have exceeded the maximum number of authorized activations".

I'm now left with a useless program icon in the system tray that tells me "Demo expired". I can't use the purchased software.

$65 down the toilet?

I hope not.

How long ago did you uninstall the demo? Perhaps there is still a file floating around in your computer that needs to be deleted. Maybe allowing hidden files to be seen and typing logical words like "Shield" in search might find it so you can delete it possibly allowing your installation.

I am sure tech support will fix this for you but in the meantime you might try uninstalling Rx again and then reinstall, if there is a file that was missed it may be picked up this time round.

PS: I cannot recall the details but there was an installation activation issue discussed in another thread on this forum (recently). The problem was due to an outdated download link which resulted in an older version of Rx being installed. You may want to take a look for this thread as it just may be the same situation you are experiencing,,,,just a thought.

Dear BGoodMan4,

True about the old version, but even when I installed the new version on my three computers, I could not activate all three computers. Eventually, I was forced to take refund by HDS after 25 plus days.

Best regards,

aladdin

I know that aladdin, I followed your threads with interest and more than a bit of dismay. I just thought that CheeseHead may possibly be having the same problem so I mentioned it.

Well, I've been going back and forth with support via a ticket to get this resolved. Support reset my product ID. I was reassured that I wouldn't have the problem again when I reinstalled. Sure enough, I still can't activate the software after reinstalling. "Demo expired". "You have exceeded the maximum number of authorized activations." Oy! Looks like I'll be waiting until after the Thanksgiving holiday to get this fixed.

I'm just wondering why this should be a problem. The demo uninstall should be a lot more thorough at getting rid of traces of itself. Since I'm installing on a dual boot OS, by the end of installation, I have entered my product code three times. Maybe this product activation redundancy is the root of the problem?

Oh, and now I see that I've missed the Black Friday sale. Well, at least I got the Facebook discount --which was also a hassle.

Bummer.

p.s.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to seek out any remnants of the demo version and obliterate them.

IMO if you do a clean install there's only one way it can know you even had a demo. That's if there is a file or two already on the computer to tell the installation that. So if you can't find any stragglers doing a search, it must be in the hidden files. If you go to the Folder Options in Control Panel and click View, then untick hide files and then click unhide, then you can do another search and see what you find if anything.

May i ask, since your dual booting, did you originally install Rollback in both OS's (as is recommended) and did you then uninstall from both OS's?

I thought it was worth mentioning because if you havent then it's possible that this is causing your activation issue. If you have then i guess that rules that out.

Hi, carfal.

Yes I installed on both OS's. Windows XP is the 1st partition, Vista on the other. Actually, what I eventually have to do is uninstall twice on XP. After using the uninstaller and restarting, the software is still visible in "Add or Remove Programs". I used revo uninstaller this last time, and it removed a lot of leftover registry keys and program files. I thought that would do the trick, but to no avail.

When I boot into Vista, there is a final uninstall operation that happens behind the scenes, so to speak. Beyond that, there is nothing that I can readily see to remove.

Uninstalling twice from the OS you initiated the uninstall from is normal. What happens is when you reboot, the subconsole is removed from the MBR first and when XP finishes loading the GUI components are supposed to be removed silently like they did in Vista.

However in your case the GUI component didnt initialise itself by itself. If i understand you correctly, you manually uninstalled it using Revo uninstaller. Because of the power of Rollback, I would have left nothing to chance and would have used Rollback's own uninstaller from within the confines of Add remove Programs to finish the job. But thats just me.

As thorough as Revo may be, its possible that something was left behind. Of coarse it's also possible that I'm barking up the wrong tree and your activation issue has nothing to do with the uninstall process.

Sorry but i dont have any other ideas for you.
