Default Restore Backup Image to a Larger HDD

Hello,

I use RB RX v8.1. My hdd crashed and I need to buy a new one. I do have a backup image saved on my external hd. Do I need to try to buy the exact same hdd or can I restore my backup image to a bigger hd? Does it have to be the same brand, etc.?

Thanks.

If you took a normal image then you should be able to restore back to a larger drive. The Image restore program will just format (or pad...not sure of the correct terminology) the rest of the free space.

If however you did a sector or raw image then normally you would have to restore to an exact size drive. It doesnt matter if its a different brand name.
If you try to restore to a larger drive then only the original disk space of the drive the image was taken from will be restored. This isnt really a problem because all you have to do after you restore the image is use a partition program to resize the partition. I think you may even be able to do this using Windows own Disk Manager located in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management. Listed in the tree on the left you'll see Disk Management.

Off course dont forget to uninstall Rollback before modifying Partitions (very important).
